Description:

This paper describes the application of statistical thinking to the decision making process of a typical refinery maintenance problem, the replacement of an in-service shell and tube heat exchanger. First, past exchanger failure and replacement data is used to estimate a distribution of times to failure. The Weibull distribution is used for this example. Second, costs are collected for replacement and installation, and business interruption upon failure. Thirdly, the failure distribution and costs are used to help solve two common maintenance decisions: (a) whether to replace an exchanger at an opportunity outage and (b) determine what is the optimum interval for planned replacement of the exchanger. The calculations and directions for building them onto an Excel spreadsheet are given.
