The blending operation is a stressful, just-in-time process for many refiners. The pressures of this critical step can make it difficult to move out of a Plan/Execute two-step business process, and when operations data is not efficiently gathered and coherently organized at the business level, it both exacerbates the problem and inhibits organizational learning. This paper discusses how the implementation of Honeywell’s Blend Management Business.FLEX™ application facilitates the full Plan/Execute/Analyze/Optimize business process, integrating data from planning, operations and laboratory sources to enable analysis and reporting on the blending operation. In the near term, the goal of blending closer to targets, and ultimately to optimize target setting, can be attained. In the longer term, the integrated information system can provide a solid foundation for the more exacting analysis requirements of the future.
