The Refining and Petrochemical process industry has spent considerable amounts of money over the past 15 years in order to modernize the operation of aging plants with Advanced Process Control, DCS and Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP systems. The last frontier for computer modernization and increased production has yet to be fully realized. The plant outside operator has greatly benefited from this automation and modernization process but that same operator’s interaction usually stops at the control room door. This paper will discuss some of the real world issues facing our industry and will also describe how Lyondell – Citgo Refining Company has decided to start the computerized modernization of their outside operations personnel with a mobile, wireless, handheld computer workforce management system, IntelaTrac, from SAT Corporation.
