This paper describes the effort to develop a multi-day refinery production scheduler for Idemitsu Kosan refineries. The daily production scheduling model has been created as a mixed-integer programming problem, and solved by an efficient optimization algorithm. Using a spread-sheet based GUI and a flexible modeling language, the daily production scheduler has been implemented on Unix and PC workstations, and tested for Idemitsu Refinery’s processing and blending operations. The system has been used by Idemitsu Kosan’s production planners, and shown to enhance production planners’ capabilities to analyze various production scenarios. We outline the scheduler model and solution process, and show selected benchmark results.
