Description:

Gasoline blend in a crude refinery is a process in which several hydrocarbons, defined as components, are transferred in batches or simultaneously to a destination tank. This process must obey predefined component ratios to meet specifications dictated by a national or international gasoline market. A strict control can be performed in a gasoline blend when an on-line optimizer based on linear programming is used. Its function is to adjust the component ratios in order to minimize gasoline production cost, obeying quality specifications. Implicit control actions within component ratio adjustments require on-line analyzers in order to correct them by feedback. When analyzers are not available, due to maintenance or failure, it is possible to use on-line quality prediction as feedback for control actions. Other common problems like off-line gasoline planning and blend index estimation for LP analysis are not solved using analyzers. Those problems are solved using quality predictions based on blend initial component ratios and qualities. This paper presents, compares and analyses several techniques for quality prediction and blend index calculations. Suggestions for on-line implementation and adjustments for real gasoline blends are also overviewed.
