This paper presents the experience of Star Petroleum Refining Company in the implementation of information technology and computer technology in a grassroots refining joint venture in Thailand. This is not a perfect example of technology implementation and management in an industrial manufacturing organization. However, it was undertaken with a recognition of the role of computer technology in information technology, and the challenges in melding these technologies. There were many successes, and some shortfalls. It’s intended that the experience of SPRC will provide some useful perspectives on this very challenging, management issue. The paper includes details of the computer hardware and software solutions selected and their implementation. However, the principal focus is on the management of the effort and the approaches taken by the corporate and project management. Some perspectives on the experience after a year of operation are also included.
