Description:

Fifty years ago, about ten years before the start of these NPRA Computer Conferences, computers were relatively new, and processes had been around for a long time. People with some knowledge of the two technologies were already thinking about their merger: * An article in Scientific American, September, 1948, titled “An Automatic Chemical Plant” speculated on use of a computer for process control. * In 1949, Gordon Brown, Donald Campbell and Ty Marcy of MIT wrote a paper on computers as control devices. * M. V. Long and E. G. Holzmann of Shell Development presented an ASME paper in November, 1952, talking about computer applications to petroleum and chemical processes and distinguishing between “supervisory” and “direct digital” control. * In a book published in 1955, A. J. Young of Imperial Chemical Industries devoted several pages to computer control, also describing two methods for using the computer.
