Description:

Information technology tools to manage environmental issues have existed since the late 70’s when Texaco implemented a mainframe-based system. As the technology has evolved over the past 25+ years, it has been both of the author’s perspectives that the results of these efforts fall into two distinct camps: •The wildly enthusiastic supporters who maintain that “they couldn’t live without the tools” •The severely disappointed who wonder why they initiated such as costly undertaking that provides minimal business value Therefore, we decided to examine a multitude of successful and failed projects and attempt to extract a list of do’s, don’ts and bewares that could be used by others as they consider an IT compliance assurance tool. Further, for those who decide to proceed, we hope to provide a means to increase the probability of success. To test our hypotheses against an actual implementation of an IT tool, we selected the National Cooperative Refinery Association (NCRA) refinery in McPherson, Kansas to determine which of our concepts was applicable.
