Description:

The combination of a Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) and Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) offer a number of advantages such as removal of difficult to biodegrade compounds, control of Exocellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) and scrubbing of the media surface. Although the addition of PAC to the biological solids offers several advantages, the abrasiveness of activated carbon on the MBR membrane fibers is a concern. Testing was performed to determine which type of carbon was the least abrasive in order to minimize the potential for damage to various formulations of MBR fibers during typical PAC operating conditions.
