Flameless Thermal Oxidation (FTO) systems designed to destroy VOC components, halogenated hydrocarbons and other non-desirous and potentially toxic vent gases have now been in operation at several facilities in the Gulf Coast for the last 2 to 3 decades. The rationalization and justification for selecting the flameless oxidation technology over conventional flame based thermal oxidizers was primarily based on the high destruction efficiency of the gaseous hazardous components combined with low NOx formation necessary in the Gulf Coast non-attainment areas. The installed units have achieved on-line availability exceeding 99%. In addition, the low cost of operation coupled with minimal maintenance has proven to be an additional important advantage of the technology.
