Description:

The Rapid Optical Screening Tool (ROSTTM) was used on selected cone penetrometer testing locations at a lOOO-acre petroleum refinery in New Jersey to characterize the type of hydrocarbons and their vertical and spatial distribution in the subsurface. Under New Jersey’s Technical Requirements, every location where a non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) plume was present or suspected would have required the installation of a NAPL investigatory well, including split spoon sampling collection for lithologic and laboratory analytical results. Because of the compounded cost of installing wells for investigative purposes, including those wells which could require double- and triple-casing, we were determined to identify a cost-effective alternative approach to this type of investigation. Ultimately, cone penetrometer testing and the ROSTrM system were chosen as a part of the alternative investigative program.
