Description:

Many drivers operate their personal vehicles under severe service driving habits such as repeated short trips of less than 5 miles, hot weather stop-and-go traffic, extensive idling or low speed driving for long distances and high speed driving for long distances. Operating gasoline-fueled passenger cars under severe service increases demands upon the motor oil. Associated lubricant related problems can lead to engine deposits, varnish, sludge, and wear. The lubricant industry is currently discussing the new ILSAC GF-3/API PS-06 category. An SAE Task Force has called for improvements in several areas, one of which is improved high temperature deposit control. The need for high temperature deposit control is reviewed and data presented which supports the need for increased lubricant performance imposed by severe service driving habits.
