Description:

New U.S. legislation requires less than 15 wppm sulfur for on-road diesel fuel after June 2006. Most refinery configurations with a hydrocracking process unit already have the capability to produce some ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) products. Since a typical diesel pool contains relatively small amounts of hydrocracked diesel, significant modifications will need to be made to existing hydroprocessing units to achieve the ULSD specifications. Refining margins make it difficult to justify major investment needed to meet new specifications. Refiners and technology providers need to seek more cost effective solutions to achieve the specifications rather than simply adding new units. Many new Unicracking™ and Unionfining™ process features now commercially available can be used to minimize the capital investment required to revamp existing assets. These innovations include next generation reactor designs and reactor internals, novel separation schemes, novel process schemes and co-processing
