Description:

This paper discusses our perspective on the base fluid requirements for the design of GF-4 engine oils. The proposed requirements for emissions system protection and fuel efficiency will increase the demands on base fluids once again. At the same time, the trend towards lower viscosity 5W-xx viscosity grades is increasing, providing further pressure for increased base fluid quality. We will describe a prototype GF-4 engine oil including laboratory test results and engine performance. With the introduction of GF-4 engine oils, Group II base oils will likely become the most cost effective path to formulating the required viscosity grades to meet the stringent fuel economy and durability requirements of the new category. The use of Group I basestocks in these grades will be greatly limited.
