Description:

This paper is a continuation of our initial work which was presented at the Fall, 1996 NPRA meeting on the benefits of severely hydro-cracked and hydro-isomerized base oils. Over the past two years, an improved understanding of these specialty base fluids has lead to several product developments in the automotive and industrial areas in both North America and Europe. This includes the replacement of expensive API Group IV poly-alphaolefins with API Group III VHVI Specialty Base Fluids while maintaining and in some instances improving “synthetic” product performance. In addition, a new class of API Group II+ Specialty Base Fluids (i.e. 110 - 120 VI) has evolved from the same severe hydrocracking and iso-dewaxing process to address the North American ILSAC GF-3 passenger car engine oil needs.
