Description:

This paper begins with a brief outline of industry activities that contributed energy and momentum to the evolutionary developments in HDEO technology. Then we will cover a very quick review of the fundamentals and history of crankcase lubrication. Next comes a brief reprise of the formulation balance approach, which considers performance, as well as economic advantages and disadvantages for base oils and additives in a general sense. The core of the paper discusses, in a qualitative sense, the more complex role of base oils in the progression of API Service Classifications from CF-4, through CG-4, and finally to CH-4. Some speculation regarding PC-9, the next API category for EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) will be thrown in for seasoning. Finally, a quantitative discussion of a base oil correlation approach will be covered with respect to the Mack T-8 engine test for CG-4, with a natural extension to the Mack T-8E for CH-4.
