Description:

The Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Original Vehicle Manufacturers (OVMs), or in the case of this paper, automobile manufacturers, developed automatic transmission fluid (ATF) specifications to ensure that their products have a ready supply of lubricant available for service use under warranty or those just experiencing problems. The ATFs for service use find their way to dealers, service stations, transmission shops, “Quick-Lubes,” and outlet stores to address problems ranging from warranty claims to do-it-yourself maintenance. The complexity of the market can be as diverse as the number of car models from North American, Japanese, Korean and European OEMs, all potentially requiring different ATF. We focus our discussion here on reviewing the state of service fill specifications and activities among Global OEMs, and where innovative technology may bridge the gap versus the trade-offs. The role of basestock is an inherent part of the continued evolution of ATF, worldwide, that may bridge global specifications if coupled with robust technology.
