Description:

Recent competitive pressures facing the petroleum industry have spurred many organizations to undergo dramatic change. Frequently, maintenance costs and equipment reliability come under scrutiny in response to industry competitive pressures. Yet anyone who has participated in a maintenance system change effort may recognize that advertised benefits are not always realized. In this environment, petroleum organizations have attempted to transform their internal operations, but do not always achieve real change because employees tend to “hunker down” until the change effort subsides, then continue with business as usual. The lackluster results rarely stem from the change plan itself, but instead derive during the poor implementation of that plan. In this paper, we will introduce an approach to change called “transformation” that will help ensure successful implementation of any new maintenance program or organizational change effort. We will discuss the key variables one must affect to go about the process of actually getting change to take place.
