Traditional, paper-based systems for recording monitoring activities seldom result in timely and appropriate action based on observed parameters and condition. Most organizations do not currently have an optimum method to help operators consistently perform activities and capture key data for decision-making. However, well-designed condition monitoring and predictive maintenance will result in the most cost-effective management of reliability with the least risk to production, quality, safety and the environment. This paper will cover the RCM-based approach to identifying optimum condition-monitoring tasks for operators, as well as an automated system, utilizing a hand-held computer and associated workstation, to manage the operator activities, similar to the way a CMMS manages maintenance tasks.
