In 2002 CITGO Petroleum Corporation developed its internal standard, CSS-113, for application of Safety Instrumented Systems in its refineries. CSS-113 is based on industry standards ANSI/ISA 84.01-1996 and the IEC-61151-3-3 Ed.1. This paper provides information about various applications of this standard within the Lemont Refinery, ranging from the fluidized catalytic cracker, the gasoline hydrotreater, flare load reduction and burner management systems for sulfur recovery units, boilers, and process heaters.
