Occupational noise is one of the most pervasive hazards in our industry. We take steps to measure, manage and control worker’s exposure, but in the end, we rely heavily on the proper use of hearing protection devices (HPD) to prevent permanent hearing loss to our employees. For many years, the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) has been used to “estimate” the protection our workers “assuming” the HPD has been worn properly. Advances in technology now provide another option to ensure workers are protected. HPD fit-testing is the next step in ensuring the worker is protected. This presentation will introduce several methods currently on the market for HPD fit-testing and share one company’s experience with implementation.
