The driving factors for change from a paper-based to an electronic-based safety permit system at a chemical manufacturer are presented with focus on the steps for development and implementation of the new framework. Insight is provided on the typical obstacles to the change, the significant benefits realized, and suggestions for others interested in this approach. Selected benefits include streamlined consistencies and increased efficiency for repetitive permit issuance for multiple users, advanced electronic conflict checks on hazardous energy isolation devices, and improved recordkeeping, tracking, and auditing functionalities.
