Process plants have traditionally relied on laboratory quality determinations and a limited number of in-line measurements to control the qualities of their feeds, intermediate streams and commercial products. Driven by a very demanding economic environment, this situation has changed dramatically with progress in reliable, accurate and affordable process spectrometers, advances in spectral information processing techniques (chemometrics) and availability of fast real time computers. The present paper provides feedback on recent implementations of Near Infrared spectroscopy (NIR) in oil refineries and describes future advanced applications.
