The financial benefits of Advanced Process Control in the chemical and refining industries are well-known and return on investment typically exceed 100%, meaning projects often pay back within a year. However, very little has been said and written about the risks and regular failure of projects to deliver the expected results. A successful implementation requires significant engineering effort, attention to detail and process experience. Applied Manufacturing Technologies and OMV have implemented many successful projects at the Schwechat refinery in Austria. This presentation will focus on a very successful implementation of Advanced Process Control on the butadiene unit which delivered significant financial returns, and specifically stresses the distinguishing aspects that ensured the success of the project.
