Description:

In this paper, a process simulator is used along with Monte Carlo simulation to account for changing process conditions when optimizing product quality outside the current operating range of a distillation unit. This work illustrates how process variability can affect the ability of the operator to meet the product specifications. By properly accounting for process variability with Monte Carlo simulation, the optimum operating targets of a distillation unit can be determined. This study demonstrates how operations can meet product specifications at lower propylene product purities than currently targeted. The same methodology can be used to optimize other distillation columns where final product specs need to be met in the presence of varying process conditions. The results of the analysis can be used to determine optimum operating targets for an advanced process control (APC) system.
