Description:

While many refiners, particularly those with currently high FCC gasoline sulfur levels, have already made strategy and investment decisions for 30 ppm sulfur gasoline, others are in the enviable position of having more time. For refiners with additional time, there exists the possibility that new technologies and well-thought out creative strategies could substantially reduce the cost of their 30 ppm gasoline sulfur solution. It is also highly likely that implementation of these new technologies (or new learnings about existing technologies) could provide big flexibility advantages over other options for meeting current (and possibly lower future) gasoline sulfur specifications. Additionally, refiners that have already selected 30 ppm sulfur technologies might find that operating costs, product value loss and inflexibility of these technologies require a “patch”. Davison has focused on developing technologies and information that will allow refiners in both of these categories to improve their ultra low sulfur gasoline position. These technologies include FCC catalysts and additives for gasoline sulfur and olefins reduction (SuRCA™, SATURN™, D-PriSM™ and RFG™), the S-Brane™ membrane process for removal of sulfur containing molecules from gasoline, adsorbents for the removal of sulfur and nitrogen from hydrocarbon streams and premium hydrotreating catalysts. In this paper we overview some of these technologies and their applicability to various ultra low sulfur gasoline scenarios. The primary focus is on the S-Brane process. We also provide information on Davison’s FCC catalysts and additives for gasoline sulfur and olefins reduction, including commercial experience.
