Description:

Shell Canada Products have implemented a gasoline sulphur-reduction program at their Montreal and Sarnia refineries. Prior to implementation, a life-cycle performance study was conducted by Jardine and Associates Inc (Jardine) to help justify the capital project economics. This paper presents an overview of the analysis process, focussing on hydrotreater reliability and its impact on FCC/CCU performance. Briefly, the analysis addressed the design, equipment reliability, maintenance, and operations (including storage and catch-up) of the revised configuration. Plant performance was quantified for a base case design, in terms of unit availability, unit utilization, and HCN/LCN export volumes, and fed forward into life-cycle costs analysis conducted by Shell. The analysis employed Jardine’s novel TARO life-cycle performance simulator.
