Description:

The widespread adoption of ISA 61511 (formerly known as ISA 84, “Functional Safety – Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector”) has had a strong positive impact on the understanding and awareness of proper Safety Instrumented System (SIS) design. ISA 61511 describes the need for end users to follow a safety lifecycle that stresses proper SIS design and installation, continuous monitoring of SIS effectiveness, and thorough documentation of testing and maintenance results. A new challenge has arisen for end users – to extract as much useful data as possible from their existing Maintenance Management Systems (MMS). The need for rationalizing and streamlining the MMS has never been higher. Traditional paper MMS do not allow for easy extraction of data. Simple spreadsheets are sufficient to track a small number of devices but are not tenable for multiple sites or many users. Some refiners who are considering applying existing Asset Management Software (AMS) with a “SIS makeover” have run into difficulties in implementation because their AMS are not “out of the box” adapted as a SIS solution. The presenters will provide guidance for end users who are considering installing a computerized MMS or who wish to leverage their existing AMS to track maintenance and testing data. Discussion will be independent of commercially available AMS and MMS platforms.
