Description:

The success of any organization or initiative lies with its people. In a highly technical industry such as ours, refinery engineers must be competent to conduct their job duties effectively and efficiently. The ever increasing importance and focus on process safety only makes this requirement all the more important. At BP’s Whiting Refinery, a competency based training and development program is being used to effectively guide the development of all new hire graduate mechanical and chemical engineers from their first day on the job through years 6-7. The competency based development program called a “Learning Road Map” is made up of select core competency categories each with a designated proficiency level depending on the subject matter. Competency categories include not only all core technical topics of refinery processes and equipment but also maintenance and operations work processes, leadership, business, and soft skills. The Learning Road Map is some what of a self-guided program that puts the graduate hire engineer in control of their own development. Another key attribute of a good training and development program is the timing of specific learnings from being able to read a P&ID early on to making repair recommendations to an ASME coded pressure vessel later in the engineer’s development progression. Coordinating specific training courses or other learning interventions with directly related on the job experiences is key to understanding and retaining the knowledge. The Learning Road Map lets the engineer know exactly what skill sets are required and at what time during their 6-7 year journey. In today’s highly competitive cost conscious refining industry, it’s more important than ever to have competent engineers supporting and troubleshooting a refinery’s technical demands safely, effectively and efficiently.
