08:00 am - 06:00 pm Registration

09:00 am - 10:00 am Keynote: FCC: Driven by Competition, Fueled by Trial -
Phil Niccum, KP Engineering, LP

Early refining processes for cracking petroleum into gasoline are reviewed as background to the development of fluid catalytic cracking during WW II where alignment of a dire demand for high octane gasoline and acceptance of risk catapulted early concepts of a powdered catalyst cracking process into a dominant catalytic cracking process in just a few short years. From these beginnings, the evolutionary path to the modern FCCU is presented with an emphasis on changing feedstock availability and product demands, competition among licensors and adaptations for protecting the environment.

10:00 am - 10:30 am Keynote: Translating Crude Mix, Macroeconomics, and Regulatory Issues to the Future Demands of FCC -
Steve Gim, BASF Corporation

This presentation will examine the impact of changes in FCC feeds resulting from the latest resurgence of tight-oils in the $60 plus crude oil world. The impact of regulatory factors, including CAFÉ standards and renewables, on the FCC product mix and their potential solutions will also be discussed.

10:30 am - 11:00 am Keynote: Husky Energy FCC Explosion and Fire -
Mark Wingard, Lead Investigator, U.S. Chemical Safety Board

On April 26, 2018, Husky Energy Oil experienced an explosion at its Superior, WI refinery. The explosion caused a number of fires in the refinery which resulted in an evacuation of almost the entire town of Superior, Wisconsin. Based on the initial findings by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), this incident shares many casual similarities to the ExxonMobil Torrance explosion which occurred in 2015 in California. The CSB has recently released a factual update on the Husky Superior incident. This presentation will discuss the initial findings of that investigation as well as any potential similarities to the Torrance incident.
